Top 100 Stories of 1995
Compiled by Celeste

I have reviewed over 400 stories since I started doing this in July.  I
thought the end of the year would be a good time to compile a Best Stories
List.

A few notes are in order:  (1) I am aware that there are good stories that
are not on this list.  I have used as my pool of stories only those that I
read and reviewed in Celestial Reviews.  It's partly a matter of luck
whether I even notice a story.  I am certain that there are good stories
that I missed.  (2) I have tried to be objective.  I consider some of
these authors to be personal friends; others I don't even know.  I have
tried to treat them all equally.  In addition, I am aware of the tendency
to give higher precedence to stories that I read most recently, and I have
tried to fight that tendency.  (3) The rankings are very much like those
given to products by Consumer Reports.  That is, stories ranked within ten
of each other probably do not differ that much in quality.

My bias, as you may know, is in favor of clever stories about
non-destructive sex that often include character development and
interesting twists of the plot.  I especially like hot, romantic stories;
but I enjoy other types of erotic stories as well.  If you have similar
interests, you'll like most of the stories on this list.  If anyone wants
to make up an alternate list or to comment on my list, I encourage them to
do so.

As far as I know (unless, as I suspect, Tammy Ng is really my daughter
writing under an assumed name), I have excluded from consideration any
stories written by anyone related to me or by anyone with whom I have had
direct sexual contact (including, therefore, myself).

When I look at this list of stories, I am truly impressed.  I can go deep
into this list and find examples of outstanding writing.  I honestly
believe that people who read these stories intelligently could benefit
more than many students do by reading the stories we assign in our
schools.  {I'm not suggesting that teachers actually do this; but think
about some of the crap you've read as assignments in English classes, and
then look at some of the stories on my list.  "The Maypole of Marymount"
and "Outcasts of Poker Flat" are not awful stories; but they would not
make this list, even if they were about sex. Of course, you should still
read Poe and Twain and perhaps Sherwood Anderson; but they are represented
on my list - in their reincarnated spirits.}

I have three wishes:  (1) That you will find some good stories on this
list and enjoy reading them.  (2) That authors whose stories appear on
this list will feel at least a little honored (and, conversely, that those
whose stories do not appear here will not feel dishonored).  (3) That the
authors of these stories will repost as many of them as possible before
the end of the year, so that readers can find them.

I am posting this LIST on Saturday December 23.  On Wednesday December 27
I'll repost REVIEWS of all 100 of these stories.  I'll also repost this
list on that day.  Although I have no authority to enforce this request, I
urge authors to repost their stories between these two dates, so that
readers can download them if they wish.

I will post an issue of Celestial Reviews on December 23 and then take a
vacation from writing new reviews until January 3.
